We are building on the peace and nonviolence work already done by the Acehnese and others.
Nonviolence International’s Peace Education Program in Aceh led by Dr. Asna Husin in Banda Aceh has already produced an Acehnese-based curriculum in: Peace Education in Acehnese High Schools and Peacebuilding for Ulama (Islamic clerics).
Transcend: A Peace and Development Network has already provided training in Medan on nonviolence internationally that was formative for many of the human rights defenders we work with.
Alternatives to Violence
Alternatives to Violence workshops fit nicely with the Acehnese peace work and offer a format for us to practice nonviolence together.
It is an intensive workshop based on activities focused on skills in friendship, affirmation, communication, cooperation and conflict resolution, but the way the activities are put together are transforming through building community and trust, exploring transforming power and opening up and changing ourselves. Any questions not addressed by the workshop will be addressed at the end. It is an opportunity for those committed to nonviolence to practice nonviolence in our daily lives.
The first AVP workshop in Indonesia was held one week after the Peace Accord was signed (read the report). AVP focuses on developing facilitators through training for trainers, advanced workshops and apprentice training. AVP workshops are offered in former war zones, with conflict refugees and bridging “sides.”
